A CONWAY GAZETTE VOL. 1 1889-1906
The publication 'A Conway Gazette' features
extracts from early editions of the 'Cadet'. After cadets left our
training ship they were only too keen to tell other Conways of theiradventures.
Therefore they wrote back to their ship, and their accounts werepublished
in The Cadet. The Friends of HMS Conway has now made these previously
unavailable texts accessible to former cadets and to interested members
of the public. This unique record provides accounts of interest to
all Old Conway's and their families, but also offers a fascinating
insight for everyone interested in all aspects of life at sea and
elsewhere.
The Conway Gazette has been researched
and edited by David Hillhouse, Trustee of the Friends and designer
of the Conway Chapel stained glass windows.
Volume 1 contains articles selected from
the first 100 editions dating from 1889 to 1906. Each article in the
Conway Gazette is captioned with the exact magazine page from which
it is taken.Price: GBP3.00 including P&P in the UK ; GBP1.50 for
overseas postage.
EXTRACTS FROM THE CADET MAGAZINE
If any article or edition of the "Cadet" magazine is of
particular interest, readers can contact the Friends of HMS Conway
and receive prints in full, of each page, article or magazine requested.
Similarly it is possible to ask for research to be undertaken on specific
cadets or subjects. Contact John Southwood
for more information.

Video - Seasoned Sailors (Set 4 No.2)
A recently released video in the Seasoned
Sailors series features Old Conway R. W. (Bob) Timbrell (1935-1937).
He left Vancouver in 1935 to find his way
in the naval world and first went to the training ship HMS Conway
in the Mersey. The video has brief background shots of Conway.
During WW II he was given command of a
hired yacht (Llanthonthy) and sent to the beaches of Dunkirk to rescue
allied troops. He became the first Canadian naval officer to be decorated
in WW II and was awarded the DSC "for good services in the withdrawal
of Allied Armies from the beaches of Dunkirk". He gives a gripping
account of his three trips to the evacuation beaches. The Dunkirk
film coverage is impressive.
Seasoned Sailors: "Rear Admiral R.W.
Timbrell CMM DSc MID CD RCN (Retired)". Set 4 No.2. Video running
time 52 minutes.
