Notice 16 (2 June 1999) - Trying to contact OC Stewart
Carlisle
From: Gordon Adams
I wonder if this is the place to search for an old friend of mine named
Stewart M Carlisle. He was aboard about the same time as me 1945/47. Stewart
lived in Sale, Cheshire and served his time with Blue Funnel, moving to
Freemantle where he lived for some time before, I understand, returning
to the UK. That is about all I can tell you about him. My association
with him dates back to the friendship between our respective Fathers.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Perry
From: Martin Corkery
I have lost contact with this OC , his year was approximately 1954-56.

Notice 19 (24 July 1999) - Report on the Conway
Club Annual London Buffet 1999
From: Matt Burrow (72-74)
The buffet was held at a new Venue this year, The Old Thameside Inn near
London Bridge Station. The published venue, The Doggett's Coat & Badge,
having been closed suddenly for removal of Asbestos!
A total of 31 Old Conway's attended, 5 Worcester's and a Pangbourne (who
came under a flag of convenience as a guest) together with 22 wives and
guests. The senior hand present was of the 37-39 vintage and three of
the last of the Conway's 72-74 were also there.
The party started at 18.30 on the dot with drinks being taken on the
balcony overlooking the Thames and the substantial finger buffet was served
at 19.30 followed by a raffle in aid of the Conway Club. The free bar
lasted as long as most people could remember and proceedings closed at
about 22.30 when the last OC's drifted away.
A good time was had by all and the Old Thameside Inn did us proud.
Remember this is an annual event, if you can make it next year please
come along. Details on tickets can be obtained through this e-mail address:

Notice 21 (24 July 1999) - Australasian Dinner for
OC's in New Zealand
From: Richard Jack
Extract from a letter to the Editor for inclusion in the last Newsletter
-
"Thank you for the Summer Newsletter 1998, which arrived sometime much
later in the year. You wrote of the Australasian Dinner in Sydney (which
was a great success) and of the need to let you know in good time for
the next one. I informed all the net sites, Canada and a number of OCs
well in advance of the event and am now letting members know that New
Zealand has been selected as the venue for the NEXT one in 2000(October).
If there is not sufficient interest the alternative is Queensland. So
OCs!, take this opportunity to make your next overseas tour down here
in 2000." - maybe this will make the next Newsletter.
It has fallen on me to sound out opinion of NZ members on email. Please
let me have your views on the matter - for example:
- are you interested?, willing to go to the dinner?, even if it is away
from your area, like Christchurch
- will you phone an OC in your area, inform him, get his views etc.
- let me know if you would like to help/do it/suggestions/anything and
get back to me this week, regardless, to let me know that you are still
around, and then I can report to Charles Hufflett who appears to be the leader.
This message is going out to all sites and email addresses tonight -
please relay by phone etc. to get the widest spread.

Notice 24 (24 August 1999) - Famous Conway Artists
From: Frank Wade
I am interested in Old Conway artists and artists who painted the old
ship. I'm afraid I know nothing on Clark but would like to know about
him. Russell Flint, who has been called one of the best British watercolourists
of the century was an old Conway (I think that there was a father and
a son and one or both were OCs, I am not sure). Kenneth Shoesmith comes
to mind when you think of great artists that did the Conway. When I was
onboard (36 to 39) he did wonderful covers for the magazine "The Cadet."
I think he came from Liverpool. Any info would be much appreciated. Cheers

Notice 25 (24 August 1999) - The School That
Jack Built - the Royal Naval College, Osborne 1903-23
From: Geoffrey Haskins (40-43)
A profusely illustrated booklet I authored has just been published: "THE
SCHOOL THAT JACK BUILT - the Royal Naval College, Osborne 1903-23". It
is primarily targetted at visitors to Osborne House, Isle of Wight, who
may be interested to know more about the remarkable college that was created
from scratch in the grounds during the first seven months of 1903 and
subsequently trained over 4000 aspiring naval officers during the twenty
years of its existence. Today there is no sign that it ever existed. Many
Conways took up places at the age of 15 years vacated by those boys who
failed to make the grade at Osborne and continue on to RNC Dartmouth,
and it occurs to me that some OC's may like to buy a copy. Booklet is
available from any bookseller, price £2.99, or by ordering direct from
the publisher: Arcturus Press, The Manse, Fleet Hargate, Lincs PE12 8LL

Notice 26 (24 August 1999) - Conway/Canadian
Navy Connection
From: Laurie Farrington
Although not an OC I have researched the Conway/Canadian Navy Connection
and have identified up to 71 OCs who served in the Canadian Navy since
1910. A paper on this subject is available on request via e-mail.

Notice 27 (22 November 1999) - HMS Conway Clock Found?
From: Dennis A Watt
As an amateur buyer of antiques, I recently purchased an old pendulum
clock from an auction. In the clock back door inside, written in
pencil, reads:
Corrected <------(I am not sure if this is the word written, but it looks like it.)
August 23 rd/09 By
Cadet T W Hayes HMS CONWAY LIVERPOOL
The
Clock still works and keeps good time. Was this clock connected to the
ship? Who was Cadet T W Hayes? Can anyone shed any light on this?
